When Life Gives You Quotes, Take Notes

Back in the day, I noticed a friend periodically jotting notes. She said she was keeping a journal, but instead of her own thoughts, she wrote things she read or overheard in her day-to-day life. Her only rule was to keep track of whatever resonated with no judgment.

My friend and I lost track of each other, but 13 clothbound journals later, I’m still keeping track of bits and bobs of advice, truths and questions. It would be impossible to write this blog without referring to these inspirational, pragmatic and often weird words of wisdom.

Just one book included these gems:

* “Double polyester is double death.” (One synthetic piece of clothing per outfit, please. Thank you, Nancy’s mom.)

“Refusing to succumb to despair is the greatest act of faith.” (Some of the most inspiring people I’ve met relentlessly choose faith over despair. Thank you, Rabbi David Wolpe.)

* “Slapping incidents are very, very rare among opera patrons.” (Truth, I think? Thank you, Susan Mathieson.)

“Always take your work seriously. Never take yourself seriously.” (Helped me navigate the lighter side of business, for sure. Thank you, #merrilyjackson.)

What are some of your favorite bits of wisdom? Please share. As always, thanks for stopping by.
